Your Weekly Latino Update from the White House

¡Buenos Dias!

Hi, I’m Julie Rodriguez, the new Latino liaison for the White House Office of Public Engagement. I’m joining the Office of Public Engagement from the Department of the Interior and I am thrilled to work with the Latino community on outreach for this administration. Expect weekly updates from me and our office, as well as special updates on what President Obama and this administration are doing for Latinos across the country.

The White House Office of Public Engagement has a number of important announcements and updates to share with you. Last week was the third week of Hispanic Heritage Month. “Renewing the American Dream – For Our Future,” our theme for the week focused on providing quality educational experiences for Hispanics and all students. Hispanics are the largest minority group in the education system with more than 1 in 5 students in the nation’s public schools, but have the lowest education attainment level overall, according to a report by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (pdf).

Latin American pop star Shakira participates in a meeting of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics Commission. President Obama appointed the singer to the Commission on the basis of her extensive philanthropic work on this issue.

White House Office of Public Engagement Weekly Update

Buenos Dias!

Over the weekend, the White House hosted a Hispanic Community Action Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada. The gathering connected senior Administration officials with Hispanic leaders, small business owners and local officials to discuss issues critical to the Hispanic community, the state of Nevada and the nation. The conference was the second in a series of regional meetings happening across the country in the coming weeks and months.

Last Friday, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin honored National Hispanic Heritage Month by joining with key Hispanic leaders to celebrate the federal government’s new Spanish-language food icon, MiPlato. MiPlato is a new generation icon that prompts consumers to think about their food choices before they eat, to build a healthy plate at meal time, and to seek more information by going to ChooseMyPlate.gov. The President also hosted a Hispanic Heritage reception, which featured healthy Latino cuisines and emphasized the importance of healthy living for the Latino community.

Last week, Vice President Biden and Dr. Jill Biden hosted a Hispanic Heritage reception at the Naval Observatory to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and recognize the outstanding contributions of Hispanic Americans across the military, government and private sector. As Social Secretary to the Vice President and Dr. Biden, noted “I was pleased to open up the doors of the Vice President’s residence for this special occasion.”
